Here’s the short answer: blackout curtains block essentially 100% of light using a foam-backed or triple-woven fabric; room-darkening curtains block roughly 95% with a tight weave that looks and drapes more like a normal curtain; thermal curtains are about insulation, not darkness — some are dark, some aren’t. For a bedroom, we recommend room-darkening for most adults and true blackout for shift workers, babies, and streetlight-facing windows. The labels are not regulated, which is why the aisle is confusing: plenty of packages say “blackout” on fabric that is honestly room-darkening. The test is simple — hold the panel up to a bright phone flashlight in the store. True blackout shows nothing, not even a glow.
How Blackout Fabric Actually Works
Two constructions dominate, and they age very differently:
- Coated (foam-back / “3-pass”): a black light-absorbing layer sprayed between two foam layers on the back of the fabric. Blocks everything from day one. The weakness is the coating itself — after years of sun and dry-cleaning it can crack and peel. Never machine-wash a coated panel.
- Triple-woven: a layer of black yarn woven between two face layers. Nothing to peel, machine-washable, drapes better — but a determined ray of sun can produce the faintest glow through lighter colors. This is what we recommend for most bedrooms.
The workroom-grade third option is a regular decorative curtain with a separate blackout liner hung behind it on the same hooks or a second rod. You get the fabric you love, real blackout performance, and the liner replaces for a fraction of the panel price when it wears out. It’s how nearly every hotel room you’ve slept in does it. The Part Everyone Ignores: Light Leaks Around the Curtain
A perfect blackout panel with ordinary mounting still leaks light at four places: over the top of the rod, down both sides, through the center split, and under the hem. In a bedroom that faces a streetlight, those edges glow like a picture frame. Here’s what actually closes them:
- Hang wider and higher than the window — the same high-and-wide rule from our hanging guide, but exaggerated: 8–12 inches past the frame on each side and 6+ inches above, so light has to turn several corners before it reaches your eyes.
- Use a wraparound (return) rod — the curved ends let the panel wrap back and touch the wall, sealing the sides. This one piece of hardware does more for darkness than upgrading the fabric ever will.
- Overlap the center by 2–3 inches, or close it with the small magnets or hook-and-loop dots sold for exactly this.
- Let the hem kiss the floor — a long panel per our length chart kills the under-glow that short panels leave.
- For total darkness (nursery, night-shift sleeper): add a ceiling-mounted track or a cornice box over the top, the workroom’s last word in light sealing.
So What Are Thermal Curtains For?
Thermal curtains earn their keep at the glass, not in the dark. A lined or interlined panel that seals against the wall traps a layer of still air in front of the window — cheap insulation in winter and meaningful solar blocking in summer, especially on big exposures like a sliding glass door. In our experience the effect is real but honest marketing is rare: a curtain helps most in older homes with single-pane windows, and it only works closed. Many blackout curtains are effectively thermal too — the same layers that stop light slow heat — which is why the terms get blurred on packaging.

- Most adults: triple-woven room-darkening panels, hung high, wide, and floor-length. Dark enough to sleep, normal enough to look like decor.
- Shift workers and light-sensitive sleepers: true blackout — triple-woven or liner system — on a wraparound rod with the center overlapped.
- Nurseries: blackout liner behind a washable decorative panel. Babies nap at noon; you’ll be glad you sealed the sides.

5 Blackout Mistakes We Fix Most Often
- Buying “blackout” that’s really room-darkening — always do the flashlight test.
- Mounting a perfect blackout panel on a skimpy rod just past the frame, then blaming the fabric for the glowing edges.
- Machine-washing a foam-backed panel. The coating comes out crazed and flaking.
- Choosing white coated blackout for a hot window — coated backs can trap heat against the glass; a liner system handles sun better.
- Expecting thermal curtains to darken a bedroom. Check the light rating separately; “thermal” promises insulation, not darkness.

Darkness supports melatonin production, and for people bothered by street light or early summer dawns, a darker room usually means falling asleep faster and waking less. Blackout curtains are the simplest way to get there — no renovation required.
Do blackout curtains block noise?
A little. Heavy, lined fabric absorbs some echo and softens high-frequency sound, but no curtain meaningfully blocks traffic rumble. Buy them for light; treat quieter as a bonus.
Can you wash blackout curtains?
Triple-woven: yes, cold and gentle, hang to dry. Foam-coated: no — vacuum with a brush attachment or spot-clean only.
Are blackout and thermal curtains the same thing?
No. Blackout describes light-blocking, thermal describes insulation. Many products do both, but each claim has to be checked on its own.
What color should bedroom blackout curtains be?
Any color — the black core or coating does the work, so a white or ivory blackout panel genuinely blocks light. Face color is purely a decorating decision; darker faces do absorb a bit more heat at sunny windows.
