Cellular Shades: How Honeycombs Insulate a Window

Cellular shades — honeycomb shades, same product — are the one window covering engineered around a job other than looks: rows of fabric cells trap still air against the glass, and still air is what insulation is. Buy them for cold windows, hot west-facing glass, and energy bills. Buy something else if the goal is a beautiful window. That honesty settles most of the decision; the rest is choosing the cell count and the fabric opacity.

Our workroom fits cellulars where comfort is the complaint — the bedroom that never warms up, the office that cooks at 4 p.m. Sixty years of measuring windows has taught us they are the least glamorous product we install and the one customers thank us for most.

How a Honeycomb Actually Insulates

Window glass is the thermal hole in every wall — a single pane resists heat flow at roughly R-1 while the wall around it sits near R-13. A cellular shade hangs a mat of closed air pockets in that hole: a single-cell shade roughly triples the bare glass number, and a good double-cell takes the window to about R-4 to R-5 by manufacturer testing. The U.S. Department of Energy credits tight-fitting cellular shades with cutting window heat loss by up to about 40 percent, and with blocking a large share of summer solar gain when closed.

The number everyone skips: those figures assume the shade sits snug in the opening. A cellular floating proud of the frame on an outside mount insulates far less, because air convects around the panel and ferries the heat past it. Cellulars are the one shade where the inside mount is not just prettier — it is the performance spec.

Cell size scales with the window: 3/8-inch cells stack tight and suit small frames, 3/4-inch cells keep proportion on tall glass, 1/2-inch is the safe middle. The mistake is big cells on a tiny bathroom window — it reads like corrugated cardboard.

Light Filtering, Room Darkening, Blackout

Opacity lives in the fabric and in a liner hidden inside the cells. Light-filtering cellulars turn direct sun into an even glow — the pleasant daytime setting. Blackout cellulars carry a foil layer inside each cell, and the panel itself goes genuinely dark — but edges still leak on an inside mount, as on every shade. Top-Down, Bottom-Up

The cellular party trick: because the panel is light and runs on cords inside the stack, it can lower from the top as well as raise from the bottom. Daylight over the top, privacy across the middle — the correct answer for street-facing bedrooms and bathrooms where neighbors are close. The mechanism adds cost and a second set of controls; buy it exactly where sightlines demand it and skip it elsewhere.

Where Cellulars Win

Cold climates and big glass, obviously. Less obviously: shallow frames. A cellular needs less mounting depth than anything else we install — brackets grab with under an inch, and a couple of inches seats the whole stack flush — which makes it the inside-mount answer for modern windows too shallow for a wood blind. They are also silent — no slat clatter in a draft — and since the 2022 federal safety rule, cordless lift is the standard, which makes them one of the safest choices around children.

Where They Lose — Read This Before Buying

Kitchens and bathrooms: the cells hold steam, grease, and odors, and unlike a faux-wood blind you cannot wipe them down. Dust and the occasional small insect find their way inside the cells over the years — a jet of compressed air clears them, but it startles first-time owners. The view: a lowered cellular is a wall of pleated fabric, with none of the see-through a solar shade offers. And the look is, frankly, utilitarian — nobody has ever ordered a honeycomb for beauty. In rooms where the window is part of the design, we spec a roman or layer a curtain over the cellular and let each do its job.

Against the Rest of the Family

Versus a roller: the roller is cheaper, wipeable, and available with view-through fabrics, but it insulates almost nothing. Care

Vacuum with the brush head on low suction; dust the top rail where the fuzz collects. Compressed air through the cells once a year. Spot-clean with a barely damp cloth — never soak a blackout cellular, the foil lining delaminates. Springs and cord loops are replaceable parts; a shade that stopped rising usually needs a twenty-minute repair, not a reorder.

Why is there dust or a bug inside my cellular shade?

The cells are open tubes at the ends, so over the years airborne dust — and occasionally a small insect — drifts in. A jet of compressed air through each channel clears it. Annoying, normal, not a defect.

How long do cellular shades last?

Seven to ten years of daily use is typical. South and west glass fades the fabric first, and the lift mechanism wears before the cells do — and it is a replaceable part.
